.. I love you is the best advice she could possibly have given Bette and she gives it to her daughter before her trip out of the country.
As the women ready themselves for the trip and Bette's family, Bette begins to feel uneasy about her upcoming date with Jay. She also begins to feel lonely and isolated from her friends. Meanwhile, Sierra tries to help Bette realize that her need to be perfect causes her to distance herself from her friends.
Sierra and Bette argue, and Sierra admits that she doesn't feel like Bette's friend any more. Bette sees this as the first crack in their friendship. Bette talks with Joyce, who suggests that she needs to slow down and try to focus on one thing at a time.
Sierra is confused by the lack of friendship between her and Bette. She is also confused by Bette's changes, and she accuses Bette of hiding the changes. Bette gets upset and runs off to her room.
Meanwhile, Helene, whom Bette thinks has been betraying her all along, is picked up by the police for driving while intoxicated. She is released later that night, and she is furious with Bette. She yells at Bette about how she's turned Bette into a perfect image of a white woman. She then admits that she was only pretending to be Bette's friend. The women then talk, and Betty talks with her friend Ana.
Sierra notices Bette's sadness after the conversation with her mother and is surprised at her. However, she notices that Bette is acting differently now than she did before. Bette also notices that her daughter is upset, and she apologizes for the way she has acted towards her. They talk about Bette's realization that she needs to let go of perfectionism. They also talk about how Bette has changed and how it is possible that Sierra feels abandoned.
Sierra is grateful for the change, but she is also confused. She wants to help Bette, and she encourages Bette to talk to her friends and not wait for her to do it. However, Bette says that she wants to get used to having friends for herself. Bette then asks Sierra to be one of her friends, and Sierra admits that she needs friends too. Sierra and Bette make up and admit that they both need to work on things.
